About The Design

This artwork depicts one of the most recognisable moments of military remembrance: a bugler sounding the Last Post, a tradition closely associated with Anzac Day and Remembrance Day commemorations across Australia.

The central figure represents an Australian serviceman dressed in formal service uniform, wearing the Australian slouch hat, one of the most iconic symbols of Australian military service. The hat, traditionally worn with the brim turned up on the left side, has been a distinctive part of Australian Army uniforms since the late nineteenth century and remains a powerful emblem of Australian soldiers.

In the artwork, the serviceman raises a ceremonial bugle to sound the Last Post. The Last Post is a bugle call that originated in the British Army and was traditionally used to signal the end of the day’s activities in military camps. Over time it became closely linked with remembrance ceremonies, where it symbolises the final farewell to those who have fallen in service.

Behind the bugler appears the Australian national flag, representing the nation whose servicemen and women have served in conflicts and peacekeeping missions across the world. The presence of the flag reinforces the national significance of remembrance ceremonies and the collective gratitude of Australians toward those who served.

The prominent words “Lest We Forget” are widely used in remembrance services throughout Australia and other Commonwealth nations. The phrase is intended as a solemn reminder that the sacrifices made by past generations must never be forgotten.

Below the artwork appears a well-known line from “For the Fallen”, a poem written in 1914 by English poet Laurence Binyon. The lines “At the going down of the sun and in the morning, we will remember them” are recited during remembrance ceremonies and have become one of the most recognised tributes to fallen servicemen and women.

Together, these elements create a powerful tribute to the traditions of remembrance observed across Australia. The design honours the men and women who served in defence of the nation, while reflecting the quiet moments of reflection that continue to unite Australians in remembering their sacrifice.
