About The Design

This artwork commemorates the Battle of Long Tan, fought on 18 August 1966 near the village of Long Tan in Phuoc Tuy Province, South Vietnam. The battle is one of the most well-known engagements involving Australian forces during the Vietnam War and is remembered for the extraordinary resilience shown by Australian soldiers in the face of overwhelming enemy numbers.

The central figures depict three Australian infantry soldiers, representing members of D Company, 6th Battalion, Royal Australian Regiment (6RAR). During the battle, approximately 108 Australian soldiers from D Company encountered a force estimated to include over 2,000 North Vietnamese Army and Viet Cong troops. Fighting took place during a torrential monsoon downpour within a rubber plantation, where visibility was limited and the sound of battle carried across the dense jungle.

The soldiers in the artwork are shown kneeling in a moment of reflection, symbolising the courage and sacrifice of those who fought that day. Their equipment reflects the typical kit used by Australian infantry in Vietnam, including webbing gear, field packs and the distinctive bush hat, which became an iconic symbol of Australian troops during the conflict.

Behind the soldiers, the presence of the Bell UH-1 Iroquois “Huey” helicopter represents the vital role of helicopter support during the battle. Huey helicopters from No. 9 Squadron RAAF were instrumental in the conflict, delivering urgently needed ammunition resupply to the embattled Australians despite heavy rain and hostile conditions. Helicopters also later assisted in casualty evacuation and continued operational support throughout the war.

Also featured is the de Havilland Canada DHC-4 Caribou transport aircraft, operated by No. 35 Squadron RAAF. These aircraft played an essential role in Vietnam by transporting troops, supplies and equipment to forward bases throughout South Vietnam, supporting the wider Australian task force operations.

The white memorial cross within the artwork symbolises remembrance and honours the soldiers who lost their lives during the battle. At Long Tan, 18 Australian soldiers were killed and 24 wounded, while enemy losses were believed to be significantly higher.

The inscription referencing “The Battle of Long Tan, 18 August 1966” anchors the design to the historic event, while the word “Vietnam” pays tribute to all Australian personnel who served during the conflict between 1962 and 1975.

Today, the Battle of Long Tan is commemorated annually on 18 August, recognised as Vietnam Veterans’ Day in Australia. This artwork stands as a tribute to the bravery, endurance and mateship of those who served, and to the memory of the soldiers who made the ultimate sacrifice.
