About The Design

This artwork commemorates the enduring partnership between Australian and New Zealand soldiers, whose shared service during the First World War gave rise to the ANZAC legend. The design features two historically accurate soldiers standing together, representing the forces of New Zealand and Australia who fought alongside each other in some of the most significant campaigns of the war.

The soldier on the left represents a New Zealand serviceman of the New Zealand Expeditionary Force (NZEF). He wears a uniform typical of New Zealand troops during the First World War, including the distinctive “lemon-squeezer” campaign hat, which became one of the most recognisable features of New Zealand military dress. This hat, with its characteristic four-dented crown, was adopted early in the war and remains a proud symbol of New Zealand’s military heritage.

The soldier on the right represents an Australian serviceman of the Australian Imperial Force (AIF). He wears the iconic Australian slouch hat, worn with the brim turned up on the left side. The slouch hat quickly became one of the defining symbols of Australian soldiers during the First World War and continues to be worn by members of the Australian Army today.

Both soldiers are shown equipped with period-correct webbing, ammunition pouches and field gear, reflecting the equipment carried by ANZAC troops during the early twentieth century. Their uniforms and equipment highlight the practical field dress used by soldiers fighting in demanding environments such as Gallipoli, the Middle East and the Western Front.

Behind the soldiers fly the national flags of New Zealand and Australia, symbolising the nations whose troops fought side by side during the war. From the landings at Gallipoli in April 1915 to the later campaigns in France and Belgium, Australian and New Zealand soldiers developed a reputation for determination, resilience and strong comradeship.

The banner carrying the words “Lest We Forget” reflects the solemn promise made during remembrance ceremonies throughout both countries. It serves as a reminder that the sacrifices of those who served must always be remembered.

This artwork honours the shared history, sacrifice and friendship between the two nations. It commemorates the legacy of the ANZACs, whose courage, endurance and mateship continue to be remembered more than a century later.

We Will Remember Them
