About The Design

This design is a tribute to the often unseen animals that have played alongside Australian and New Zealand forces across history. The polo honours the loyalty, endurance and sacrifice of animals in service, bringing together multiple eras into one cohesive and reflective piece.

On the front, Sarbi takes prominence, representing the modern contribution of military working dogs. Sarbi served in Afghanistan and became a symbol of courage, resilience and companionship. Her presence grounds the design in contemporary service, acknowledging the vital role dogs continue to play in detecting threats, protecting soldiers and supporting operations in active conflict zones.

Surrounding this central figure are subtle references to earlier service animals. Pigeons appear in flight across the upper section, symbolising their critical role in wartime communication. In the background, camels are depicted moving across the landscape, referencing their use in arid environments such as the Middle East. Employed extensively during World War I, particularly in desert campaigns, camels provided essential transport across terrain where conventional vehicles could not operate. Their adaptability made them indispensable to supply lines and troop movement.

The design also incorporates the purple poppy, a symbol specifically dedicated to animals that served and suffered in war. Distinct from the traditional red poppy, it acknowledges that animals too were part of conflict, often without choice, yet with unwavering loyalty. It reinforces the overarching message of remembrance beyond human service.

On the sleeves, a monochrome Australian flag is integrated into the composition as well as the words “Lest We Forget” are included as a simple but powerful reminder. Traditionally associated with remembrance ceremonies, the phrase extends here to honour not only soldiers, but also the animals who served beside them.

The back of the polo continues the story with the Waler horse, one of the most iconic symbols of Australian military history. Bred for strength and resilience, Walers were widely used during World War I, particularly by the Australian Light Horse. Known for their endurance in harsh desert conditions, these horses carried troops across vast distances and played a crucial role in mounted operations.

Alongside them, donkeys are referenced as another essential but often overlooked contributor. Donkeys (alongside mules) used extensively in campaigns such as Gallipoli, donkeys carried supplies, ammunition and wounded soldiers across difficult terrain. Their quiet strength and reliability made them vital to survival in frontline conditions.

Together, these elements form a design that moves beyond traditional remembrance, offering a broader perspective on service. It is not only a tribute to human sacrifice, but also a respectful acknowledgement of the animals whose loyalty, strength and endurance helped shape the outcomes of history.
